Extraction

Unfortunately in some cases extraction cannot be avoided. The reasons for extracting a tooth can be toothache, poor prognosis of the tooth or orthodontics

However extraction is a routine treatment it is important who takes the tooth out and how the treatment goes. At our clinic oral surgeons extract probematic teeth and we provide maximum care to our patients before and after the procedure.

We know the fears that our patients experience before extractions. If you need to have a tooth out we can ensure that you will be treated by our caring and skillful colleagues who will solve your toothache without any stress and complications in no time.

Before tooth extraction

There are some things to do before extraction in order to avoid later discomfort, complications and make the treatment easier.

The followings are essentials before tooth extraction

  • Thorough brushing and flossing
  • Scale and polish carried out by our dental hygienists

The aim of these dental hygiene instructions and treatments is to achieve as bacteria free enviromnet as possible to avoid bacteria get into the wound.

Apart from brushing, using  a mouthwash is also important before extraction. It is also recommended to avoid smoking and alcohol a few days before and after the treatment.

After extraction

There are some areas that we need to pay attention to after extraction.

Our oral surgeon will do her best in supporting your healing after the treatment but in order to achieve the best results you also need to cooperate in many ways.

What do we need to pay attention to after extraction

  • spitting, rinsing and sucking the wound are not allowed
  • avoid eggs, milk and dairy for 2-3 days
  • avoid smoking and alcohol
  • do not bend or do excercises
  • avoid heavy lifting
  • oozing is normal, in this case sit down and bite on a piece of gauze
  • You can put cold compress on your face in the extraction area. This will reduce post-operative pain  and swelling
  • in 99% of cases it is not necessary, but if indicated you can take painkillers based on your dentist’s instructions

It is important to follow these instructions in order to avoid post-operative complications such as dry socket. If you have strong pain 1-2 days after the extraction, it means that you have dry socket. Dry socket means that you loose the blood clot that was formed after the extraction (because you were rinsing or spitting) and the bone is not covered anymore. Smoking can also cause dry socket. In this case it is important to see your dentist.

The procedure of tooth extraction

  • we thoroughly clen the surrounding area of the tooth to avid infections
  • we gently loosen the tooth and extract it
  • a blood clot will form in the socket where the tooth was
  • the clot protects the bone and stops bacteria get into the wound
  • we place a disinfectant tablet and a special sponge into the socket that stabilises the blood clot
  • in order to support healing and protect the wound we seal it with a few stiches
  • a week after the extraction we remove the stiches and examine the wound
  • the next step is planning the replacement of the extracted tooth if necessary

The whole procedure of extraction is carried out under local anaesthesia and it is absolutely painless

Replacing the extracted tooth

If your tooth was not removed for orthodontic reasons but due to poor prognosis, periodontal disease  or pain, it is recommended to consider replacing it. It is important to replace the gap as soon as possible so the implant/bridge can take over the position and functions of the extracted tooth. The gap can cause serious negative effects in the mouth if it is not replaced in time.

Teeth are part of our entire body system and important elements of the arches, therefore their loss can cause short- as well as long term problems. Replacement of missing teeth is easier straight after extraction.

Implants need secure and stabile base. If there is no base, the success will not be guaranteed no matter what implant and what technique we use. We would like your implant to stay stabile and reliable for at leaset 50-60 years.

If there is not enough bone and the sinus is too close, we need to lift it by placing bone grafting material under the sinus. This way we will have enough space to place the implant.

Sinus lift is a safe procedure that provides a secure base for your implant.

What does sinus lift mean?

During the procedure the internal wall of the sinus towards the  missing tooth is lifted and bone grafting material is placed into the cavity that is formed by lifting the sinus. The bone grafting material is usually a mixture of your own bone shavings and a bio bone grafting material.

The procedure is totally painless, fast and safe.

When the bone grafting material solidifies it will be as hard as natural bone and the implant can be placed in it.

What is the result of bone grafting?

  • adequate base for the adoption of the implant
  • adequate srtrength for a long term tooth replacement that can last for decades
  • the sinus does not injure during the implantation
  • the implant will be stabile and fix because it will be placed in a secure, strong base

Sinus lift can be carried out even in case of multiple tooth replacement. In our climate zone people tend to have thinner bone, therefore we carry out the procedure quite often at our clinic in order to perform perfect implantation.

We are looking forward to see you at our clinic!

What probles do our gum surgery treatments cure?

Gum surgery, gum contouring, treatment of “gummy smile”

Gummy smile means that the teeth appear abnormally small due to the gums covering the upper parts of them. This condition can be treated by laser gum surgery. During the procedure we remove the undesired part of the gums by laser creating a harmonic smile and bringing the size of the teeth in balance with the shape of the upper lips. The entire procedure is painless and bleeding is minimal, therefore you can carry on with your everyday tasks (work, meeting, university etc.) after the treatment.

Lingual frenectomy

The tongue has an important role in speech, mastication, cleansing of the teeth and tasting. The movement range of the tongue is limited by the lingual frenum. In some cases the lingual frenum is too short and causes difficulties in speech and cleansing. With the quick, gentle and painless elongation of the frenum this limitation can be abolished. This is why many parents choose this option for their children’s treatment.

Elongation, correction of labial frenum

Labial frenum is responsible for the movement of the lips during smiling and talking. In some cases the labial frenum is too short and pulls the lips away from the teeth more than it needs to. In this case we show more of the gums which is not aesthetic and the gums are not protected by the lips either.

The elongation of labial frenum is fast and painless and in most cases the results can be noticed straight aftre the treatment. After the treatment our patients reported that they feel more confident and smile more that they used to.

What are the main advantages of laser gum contouring?

  • in most cases the treatments is painless, there is no need for anaesthetic
  • bleeding is minimal
  • the wound heals fast and cannot be noticed after a few days
  • more self-confidence
  • appealing and beautiful smile
  • you can carry on your everyday tasks straight after the treatment
  • it is highly recommended for children because the procedure is fast and painless

Infected teeth can cause severe pain. In case of infected teeth that have previously been root treated we advise a new root canal treatment or apicoectomy. This way we can save the tooth and do not need to extract it.

  • we fill the cavity with a special filling material and homeopathic materials that aid healing
  • following the laser sterilisation we close the gum back
  • we monitor the healing of the area for the next few weeks

The aim of the procedure is to save the tooth by removing the inflammed areas that cause pain and disinfect it. We make sure that the wound heals fast, so you will can forget the problem and the procedure in no time.

We recommend apicoectomy if

Contrary to popular belief wisdom teeth do not bring wisdom but can cause several problems. Wisdom teeth are the last in the arch and are very difficult to reach. We have 4 wisdom teeth – 2 on the lower and 2 on the upper jaw.

What problems can wisdom teeth cause?

  • partially erupted wisdom teeth can impact  and cause foodtrap and pain
  • it pushes against the neighbouring tooth causing pain and decay
  • in many cases the pressure it can put on neighbouring teeth can cause root resorption and therefore can lead to tooth loss.
  • it pushes other teeth further causing crowding in the front area that can only be correced by braces
  • due to the movement of the teeth the bite changes, opposing teeth will not properly close together, therefore they can wear faster and cause pain
  • the decreasing bite and mismatched surfaces put more pressure on the jaw joints that can cause wear and further pain

Unfortunately wisdom teeth that are growing perfectly are reare. If you have noticed any of the above problems it is advised to see your dentist as soon as possible in order to avoid inflammations infections or cysts caused by your impacted wisdom tooth.  Furthermore impacted, inflammed wisdom teeth can also cause nodules with symptoms such as hair loss, rheumatism, heart and vascular disease.

In order to avoid further complications it is advised to see our oral surgeon for a consultation.

How do wisdom tooth problems arise?

  • if our wisdom teeth cannot fully erupt it can push the gums, cause  sensitivty and inflammation in the area.
  • partially erupted wisdom teeth can lean against neighbouring teeth and cause gingivitis and decay on the healthy tooth
  • wisdom teeth can push other teeth further causing decaym crowding and gingivitis
  • crowding teeth are prone to gingivitis and decay thatcan be painful and cause tooth loss if not treated
  • the force of pushing can cause pain in the whole oral cavity as well as in the jawas and ears
